Amongst all the administrative tasks you have to complete on a month-to-month basis, updating your Google My Business (GMB) listing is not up there as a top priority. However, the effects of irrelevant or old information could go beyond just looking out-of-date, you could be losing customers every day!
Here’s why it’s so important to keep your GMB listing up-to-date:
Imagine if you had a billboard on a major highway with your old business name or a previous address. All those drivers passing by looking at out-of-date information. Your GMB listing is no different. Thousands of eyes could be scanning your listing and looking at old details.
To update your information, all you need to do is follow these simple steps:
- Login to your Google My Business page
- Choose your listing
- Click on the info button in the menu
- Update your details
If you’re wondering about what details you should be regularly updating, here’s a list of some of the key pieces of information:
- Business Name
- Category (industry)
- Opening Hours
- Photos (if applicable)
- Menu (for restaurants/cafés)
- Attributes (key features, such as “Free Wi-Fi” or “Customer Parking”)
Having fresh content serves multiple purposes for your business. Firstly and most importantly, it’s an opportunity to promote your new products or services – for free. The best way you can do this through your GMB listing is by taking advantage of Google Posts, which is a game-changing feature that allows you to promote new products, sales or events.
Secondly, by being active and having accurate updated details, it shows both to the public, and to Google itself, that you haven’t abandoned your listing and in fact, you’re still in business. If Google can’t verify your information and deems it to be inaccurate, this could affect your rankings.
Updated Client Reviews
One of the most effective ways to build a great reputation online is to have clients post reviews to your GMB page, especially now that Google has made it easier for people to see your reviews. To help build your online reputation even more, you could ask your clients to update their reviews to reflect their current experiences with your business. Or simply, just ask all of your current clients if they could add a review to your GMB page.
In addition, if your clients add pictures to their review, it adds proof to the pudding of their experience and has the potential to increase exposure for your business greatly. For example, our own digital strategist Matt posted a review on one of our clients’ GMB page and added some photos of his experience. Remarkably, his photos have been seen by prospective clients more than 30,000 times.
